What we found

Three findings, marked on the photograph.

The back of a hardware shop with boxes in front of a fire exit, a stockroom door propped open and a heater lead across the aisle.

1

Stock blocks exit door

Act now

Move the stock away from the exit door and keep a clear path to it.

2

Stockroom door propped

Within three months

Fit a closer to the stockroom door and stop propping it.

3

Heater lead across aisle

Within a month

Move the heater next to a wall socket so no lead crosses the aisle.

What changed

The same place after the work.

The same shop with the fire exit clear behind a taped zone and the heater moved back against the wall.

The exit has a marked clear zone and the heater sits by the wall next to its socket.

The shop sells paint, tools and fixings. The sales floor and stockroom are on the ground floor, and a second floor of bulk storage is reached by a stair from the stockroom.

The sales floor was tidy and the shelving was sound. The trouble was at the back, where the shop meets the stock. The fire exit on the right had boxes of deliveries stacked in front of it, left there between a delivery and a shelf-fill that had not yet happened. The stockroom door was propped with a paint tin, because it swung shut on whoever was carrying something.

We marked three findings. The owner took the stock away while we were still on site and said, fairly, that he had walked past it for months. The closer for the stockroom door is booked, as it needs a softer spring so it will not slam. The heater lead was the easiest fix of all.

The yellow tape in front of the exit is his idea, and it works. Staff now see the boundary before they stack past it.
